In a world where geo-political pressures, market uncertainties, rising inflation, supply chain constraints, and unprecedented cybersecurity threats are intensifying, the quest for clean, reliable, and secure energy has never been more critical. These multifaceted challenges are having a global impact. This year’s Energy, Infrastructure, and Environment (EIE) Summit aims to address these pressing issues, spotlighting the collaborative efforts of U.S. federal agencies to secure, modernize, and transform legacy systems and processes, while at the same time trying to understand the risks and benefits of emerging technologies like Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) and quantum computing. 

As the nation witnesses a surge in electrification from data centers, EVs, and increasing population, questions arise about the stability and resiliency of our electricity supply and the grid that supports it. Can we keep up with the escalating demands from agencies, businesses, and consumers at current capacities, and what investments need to be made now to ensure a safe, reliable, and secure grid to support future requirements?

What role will GenAI and other emerging technologies have in modernizing, securing, and optimizing energy generation, transmission, storage, and distribution? How do we use GenAI to support decision making to forecast demand, production, and supply while balancing risk, ethics, and compliance?  GenAI can be a force multiplier and powerful tool, but do agencies have the right people, processes, and training to rapidly realize value while not compromising the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the assets essential to mission accomplishment?  

IT and OT convergence and the rapid increase in inverter-based resources, like solar and wind power generation, being added to the bulk power system have expanded the cybersecurity attack surface exponentially. Protecting our energy infrastructure from threats is essential for maintaining national security, critical functions, and economic stability. Supply chain security is also vital to ensuring that the components and materials necessary for energy systems, production, management, and operations are secure, trustworthy, and readily available.
