Special Agent Raymond Romano is the Deputy Assistant Director of the Cyber and Technology Security Directorate and the Director of the Cyber Threat and Investigations Office at the Department of State where he is responsible for protecting the Department of State’s national security and global technology networks domestically and in 280 embassies worldwide.

Mr. Romano leads the Department’s multi-faceted cyber threat and investigations program, including threat analysis, on-network threat hunting, mobile device analysis, malware reverse engineering, cyber intrusion investigations, criminal investigative support, as well as technical surveillance.

Mr. Romano oversees the Diplomatic Security Digital Forensics Lab, a state-of-the-art facility with enhanced tools and capabilities for extracting and analyzing digital evidence in every form in support of Diplomatic Security’s criminal investigative program. Mr. Romano also serves as the primary advisor to his directorate’s Deputy Assistant Secretary to develop and carry out the strategic vision, mission, and goals, and is responsible for strategic planning, workforce planning, resource management, and risk management.

Mr. Romano has over 24 years of experience providing leadership and management of global physical and technical security operations. He started his career at the Department as a Security Engineering Officer focusing on technical security measures including a tour at the US Embassy in Moscow, Russia. Mr. Romano was sworn in as a Special Agent of the Diplomatic Security Service in February of 2007. Mr. Romano served multiple tours in the New York Field Office, as the Agent in Charge of the protective detail for the US Ambassador to the United Nations, and as an Assistant Regional Security Officer at the US Embassy in Bogota, Colombia.
