Mr. Coburn entered the FBI in January 2003. He was assigned to the Dayton Resident Agency (RA) Cincinnati Field Office where he investigated international and domestic terrorism, violent crimes, and cyber-crimes. In 2006, Mr. Coburn transferred to the Phoenix Division, Sierra Vista RA, where he investigated border crimes including drugs and human smuggling, violent crimes, and cyber-crimes.

In 2009, Mr. Coburn was promoted to Supervisory Special Agent within Cyber Division where he supervised National Security Cyber Computer Intrusions and Counterterrorism.

In 2010, Mr. Coburn transferred to Salt Lake City where he was the Field Supervisor of the Cyber Squad. He created Operation Wellspring which was one of the first Cyber Task Forces in the United States. His squad covered national security and criminal intrusion in Utah, Idaho, and Montana.

In 2014, Mr. Coburn transferred to Cyber Division where he was the Unit Chief of the Major Cyber Crimes Unit (MCCU). He provided guidance, leadership, and oversight of all criminal computer intrusions investigated throughout the FBI. Mr. Coburn oversaw the FBI’s response to Ransomware including the targeting of the healthcare industry. Mr. Coburn represented the FBI on the White House subcommittee on Ransomware which concluded with formalized guidance to the entirety of the healthcare industry.

In August 2017, Mr. Coburn was promoted to Assistant Special Agent in Charge in the Louisville field office where he was responsible for the criminal branch as well as seven Resident Agencies throughout Kentucky.

In June 2019, Mr. Coburn was promoted to Section Chief, Field Operations, within the Operational Technology Division where he was responsible for the Technically Trained Agent program, Electronic Technicians program, the Radio program, and the Audio, Video, and Traditional surveillance programs. Mr. Coburn provided the scoping of video cameras for the Body Worn Camera (BWC) initiative.

In August 2021, Mr. Coburn became the Section Chief of the Digital Forensics & Analytics Section (DFAS). Mr. Coburn is responsible for the training and certification of the FBI’s Digital Forensic Examiners located throughout the Regional Computer Forensics Laboratories (RCFLs) and Computer Analysis Response Teams (CART) throughout the U.S. Mr. Coburn oversees DCAP storage solution and the BWC initiative. Mr. Coburn successfully planned and executed DFAS’s transition to Huntsville, ensuring his section’s transition to the Innovation Center and Kinetic Cyber Range.
