On January 12, 2025, Director Christopher Wray selected Timothy A. Ferguson as FBI Assistant Director at the Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Division, a position he held in an acting capacity beginning in April 2024. Located in Clarksburg, WV, the CJIS Division provides vital systems and services to local, state, tribal, and federal agencies that help ensure public safety. These include the National Crime Information Center, the FBI’s Next Generation Identification System and associated biometric services, the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) for firearm purchases, the National Threat Operations Center which receives and processes tips from the public, and the Uniform Crime Reporting Program which publishes crime and law enforcement statistical data.
Mr. Ferguson entered on duty with the FBI in August 2002. Upon graduation from special agent training, he was assigned to the Cincinnati Division, Dayton Resident Agency, working primarily criminal investigations with the Southern Ohio Safe Streets Task Force. In May 2011, Mr. Ferguson was promoted to Supervisory Senior Resident Agent in the Dayton (OH) Resident Agency, with oversight of all criminal programs and served as Cincinnati Division’s Civil Rights Program Coordinator.
In September of 2015, Mr. Ferguson was again promoted to Assistant Section Chief of the Violent Crime and Gang Section in the Criminal Investigative Division (CID) at FBIHQ where he had oversight of the Safe Streets and Gang Unit, Violent Crime Unit, International Violent Crime Unit and the Indian Country Crime Unit. Mr. Ferguson was selected as the Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the Springfield (IL) Division’s Criminal Branch in December of 2018 where he oversaw the criminal programs as well as critical incident response, security, training, recruitment, National Academy and applicant programs.
In December of 2020, Mr. Ferguson was appointed to Senior Executive Service and reported to the Operational Technology Division located in Quantico, Virginia, where he served as the Chief of the Field Operations Section and the Chief of the Digital Forensics and Analytics Section.
In January of 2023, Mr. Ferguson was named Deputy Assistant Director of the Operational Programs Branch at the CJIS Division. In this position, Mr. Ferguson was responsible for the National Threat Operations Section and the NICS Section.
Mr. Ferguson has held multiple collateral duties, to include Crisis Negotiator, SWAT Operator, Medic, Adjunct Faculty Member, and Behavioral Analysis Unit Coordinator.
Mr. Ferguson is a U.S. Army veteran and has a bachelor’s degree in English from Welsh College in Nashville, TN, as well as a master’s degree in behavioral science from Wright State University in Dayton, OH.
