Speaker Bio
As the National Cancer Institute’s Chief Information Officer (CIO), I am responsible for the overall
information technology (IT) performance of the National Cancer Institute (NCI). My education spans
from the sciences, specifically chemistry and biology, to modern information technology. Early in my
career I worked in labs as a biological researcher for both cancer and basic biology focusing on protein
folding. Three decades ago, I transitioned to IT support for medical research and have enjoyed every day
of it.
The NCI is a biomedical research organization and working at the NCI has been the best career path a
person like me could imagine. NCI has a great mission, dedicated, yet humble staff, and visionary
leadership. We utilize IT for common administrative functions, as well as cutting edge biological
research, including clinical trials. To achieve success in our broad ranging mission we first focus on
creating a great working environment for our staff. Next, we communicate with, and develop deep ties
to the scientific and administrative staff that perform IT functions. Lastly, we prepare for the future. We
continually work on developing our 3-year strategic plans and our underlying objectives to be successful.
As the CIO my focus is creating a shared IT vision across the Institute that ensures the smartest people in
the world have everything they need to seamlessly lead, conduct, and support cancer research across
the nation.
