Emergent technologies such as Zero Trust and Artificial Intelligence are high priorities for implementation at the NIH, the largest organization focused on improving human health through biomedical research. Rapidly implementing and adapting workflows to these emergent technologies can be risky to ensuring continuity of ongoing IT operations. At the 27 Institutes and Centers of the NIH, different approaches are taken to be demonstrably innovative as well as secure, cost effective, and trustworthy. In this panel, leadership of IT at the NIH will discuss the balance between ongoing operations and innovation within the NIH. We leverage our nearly one half of an exabyte of data we manage in our central cloud program and our data workbenches that enable secure and advanced data analytics to deliver our research mission. We will discuss different strategies to prioritizing innovation to support our mission and challenges we face remaining as agile as our scientific workforce and research institutions demand.
